Turkey

What can I expect from Turkey?

Turkey counts as one of my favorite countries around the world. It’s actually surprising that many people don’t know that much about Turkey, because it has so much to offer. Turkish people are really open minded and welcoming, which makes this country an even better destination. The culture is like nothing I have ever seen before. I actually planned to stay for two weeks, but decided to stay for a whole month because I liked it so much.

Even though Ankara is the capital of Turkey, most people decide to travel to Istanbul. The city of 16 million people has plenty of historical sites like the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia and the Galata tower that are worth visiting. Besides that, Istanbul is half on the European continent and half on the Asian continent.

Of course Istanbul isn’t the only place that is worth visiting in Turkey. Apart from cities like Istanbul, Bursa, Izmir and Ankara there are beautiful beach towns in the south of the country that will take your breath away. Antalya is a popular place for tourists who want to enjoy the sun and the beach, but Fethiye is more local and has many valleys you can hike to.

One place that you have to see in Turkey is Cappadocia. It is located in the middle of the country and like no other place in the world. People here used to live in caves, which you can still explore today. There are countless valleys in different shapes that you can visit. The fact that you will see hot air balloons that are rising up to the sky every single morning, makes this destination a magical place to visit.

No matter where you go you should try some Turkish delight and Turkish tea. You will find the best Turkish delights when visiting the local markets. Unlike the Turkish Döner or Kebab you will find anywhere in Germany (because it’s invented by a Turkish person in Berlin) the food you will find in Turkey is very different. In Turkey kebabs are a speciality from the Nevsehir region and served in a pottery made in Avanos. When they bring the kebab to the table they will break it open with a small hammer. Apart from that I can recommend you to try Gozleme, Pide, Su Boregi, Baklava and Lokum, known as Turkish delight.

Useful travel tips

1
Get a Turkish SIM card Get a Turkish SIM card or activate EU roaming to your current card. Many people in Turkey don’t speak English, so it will be very beneficial to use a translator on your phone to communicate.
2
Eat at Turkish restaurants If you want to save money, eat at local Turkish restaurants. To find the best ones simply ask the locals, they always know the best spots to eat out. Besides that it's also the best way to get to know the county & culture.
3
Always have cash Always carry cash with you. In Turkey you can’t pay everywhere by card, especially not in more remote places like Cappadocia, so it’s useful to have cash with you.
4
Use a VPN for booking.com In Turkey you can’t use booking.com to book apartments or hotels. If you want to use it anyways you have to book your accommodation before you arrive or use a VPN.
