Sweden

What can I expect from Sweden?

Sweden, the country with endless forests & lakes, sleepy little towns and wild moose. Most people travel to Sweden to enjoy the outdoors. The population of Sweden is relatively small, most of the country consists of forest. In the south you will find beautiful cities like Stockholm, Örebro and Gothenburg. The father you go up north, the more untouched nature you will find.

In my opinion the perfect Sweden trip consists of a mix of exploring cities and going for hikes in the forests and swimming in crystal clear lakes.

From all of the cities I really recommend you to see Stockholm, which also has a great airport with good flight connections. The old town of the city, called Gamla Stan, is on a small island. Different bridges connect the city with the old town, where you will walk on cobble stoned streets while exploring little shops in colorful buildings. You can easily explore the old town by walking or driving a scooter which is a lot of fun! Even if you don’t have to get anywhere you should also take the train, just to see different subway stations – they are the largest art exhibition in the world! My personal favorite is the Stadion station that is painted with a beautiful rainbow. Apart from that, the subway stations are safe and clean. I think the only place in the world where I have seen with such nice subway stations is Singapore!

Stockholm

If you want to see the real Sweden you have to travel farther up north to see the breathtaking nature. My best friend and I took a flight to Sundsvall and drove 2.5h inlands to be in the middle of the country. Here you won’t see many tourists and there will certainly be more moose than people. We fell in love with the forests and lakes we explored there. Some days we went on hikes next to beautiful waterfalls and were the only people there. In most European countries places like this are crowded in the summer. The nature in Sweden just feels so peaceful, it’s hard not to feel good there. I think it’s especially great if you want to recharge your batteries and just experience the here and now.

Useful travel tips

1
Have some fika! Fika is the Swedish morning tea or afternoon tea, consisting of coffee or tea and Swedish pastry like Kanelbulle. If you’re not familiar with the term, morning/ afternoon tea is basically a little snack between breakfast and lunch or lunch and dinner. You will find plenty of cute cafes in Sweden with the most delicious pastries.
2
Rent a car or campervan Rent a car or campervan to explore the wilderness of Sweden. There is really a lot to see in the countryside, but to explore it you will need to rent a car. This is literally the best way to get around in Sweden and to explore nature off the beaten path.
3
Bring clothes for all weather conditions The summer in Sweden can be hot or cold, sunny or rainy. When I went to Sweden in July we had sunshine every day, but that’s not always the case in July. You will be best prepared with a raincoat and a cozy sweater, just in case.
4
Carry some cash with you Sweden is very digital and at most places you will be able to pay by card, but if you travel far away from the cities you might need some cash. Especially if you are far from the next town it might be hard to find an ATM.
