What can I expect from Scotland?

Scotland, the land of lush green landscapes, mountains, old historic cities, towns and highland cattle. Scotland has something you will find nowhere else in the world. The landscapes, the Celtic music and the old stories about fairy tales and monsters make Scotland one of the most mystical places I ever visited. There are countless places to visit and things to do. A lot of people decide to visit Edinburgh, the capital, go hiking in the highlands, do a whisky tasting tour or visit Loch Ness in the hope to see the legendary monster of Loch Ness.

Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland and so worth a visit. When you walk through the streets of Edinburgh, you feel like walking through a Harry Potter world full of magic! Old castles and cathedrals, unique little shops and hidden alleys, will make you feel like you just encountered a secret world. Edinburgh is the perfect place to visit if you love old castles and towns with hidden alleys that make you feel like you are traveling in time (or into a Harry Potter world). Besides that, it’s a good place to arrive when you’re traveling to Scotland. From here you can travel by bus or rent your own car to explore the highlands.

There are countless beautiful hikes you can do in Scotland. It really rains a lot in Scotland, but the rewarding views you get on the hikes will make you forget the rain. One of the most popular routes is the West Highland Way. This hike stretches 96 miles (154 km) from Milngavie to Fort William, offering beautiful scenery along the way, from loch-shores, countryside-parks and open moorlands to steep mountains. For the very ambitious hikers, there is another hike at the end of Loch Ness you can do up to Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Scotland. For those who want to try to see the legendary monster of Loch Ness, the Loch Ness lake isn’t far away from Fort William and might be worth a little detour.

For all the Harry Potter fans, the iconic Jacobite Train, a historic locomotive that inspired the famous Hogwarts Express in the Harry Potter movies, runs through Scotland and you can book a trip with it! It runs from Fort William to Mallaig, and stops at some places where the Harry Potter movies have been filmed.

Scotland Travel Guides

Below you will find different blog posts about Scotland. If you like mystical places that feel as magical as the Harry Potter world, you will love Scotland. There is really a lot to see, in the cities as well as in the countryside. I think a good trip to Scotland should include both, because you will be able to see Scotland from different sides. If you are curious to learn more about Scotland and it’s travel destinations, check out my posts down below! There are some places that will blow your mind!

Useful travel tips

1
Get the Edinburgh city pass If you want to see a lot in Edinburgh, you should get the city pass for 45 GBP. There are different options for 1-3 days, all including transportation to and from the airport.
2
Remember that Scotland has it's own culture Scotland is part of the United Kingdom, but a separate nation with its own history, culture and heritage. When you’re visiting Scotland, try to avoid making generalisations about the Scottish and the English. You should never call a Scottish person “English” to respect their culture.
3
Go wild camping In the Scottish highlands you can do amazing hikes and you're allowed to put your tent anywhere you like, as long as it's not on somebody's private property. You will see the beauty of the Scottish highlands in the best possible way. Sometimes it can be quite challenging to find a spot where you can put your tent, but in the worst case you will always find a campsite.
