Hungary

What can I expect from Hungary?

Hungary is an amazing country to visit for a number of reasons. You will find ancient buildings, countless thermal baths and delicious street food here. One thing that makes this country such a great destination is that there are usually good flight connections to Budapest and traveling in the country is very budget friendly. It shares the border with its neighbor countries Slovakia, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Romania and the Ukraine. If you are traveling in one of those countries it might be easy to do a road trip to Hungary or to travel by train.

Hungarian Parliament, Budapest

The most popular place people visit in Hungary is the capital Budapest. The city will surprise you in many ways, because there is so much to see and to do. Besides that it’s a city that is a great destination for every season of the year. If you can, try to visit it at the end of summer or in fall, because it won’t be as hot, but you will still be able to spend a lot of time outside. Budapest has also become a very popular spot for digital nomads, because it’s modern, budget friendly, there are countless things to do in the city and the wifi is really good. If you are working remotely from Europe you might want to check out this city. There are many good coworking spaces and beautiful cafes from where you can work.

Fisherman’s Bastion, Budapest

Hungary is also a very safe country to visit. As a solo female traveler I never felt unsafe when I was there. Of course, you should follow the general rules like not walking through the streets alone at night or not accepting drinks from strangers. Simple things you wouldn’t do in any city if you want to be safe.

Useful travel tips

1
Learn the basic vocabulary Even if it’s hard, try to learn the basic words in Hungarian, such as “hello”, “thank you” and “delicious”. Not everybody in Hungary speaks English, so people will really appreciate it if you try to learn some Hungarian. Even if you pronounce it completely wrong, simply by trying you’re opening hearts and doors.
2
Get some Hungarian Forint Although Hungary is part of the European Union, they don’t have the Euro here. Many restaurants in the city still don’t accept a card as a payment method, so the best thing you can do is to get some cash in the city and be prepared to pay in Hungarian Forint.
3
Add tips In Hungary tips are usually not included in the bills, but people will expect from you to give tips. Usually 10% - 15% tips will be very appreciated, unless service tax is already added.
4
Use the tram In Budapest people prefer to take the tram instead of the taxi. It’s fast, it’s fun and it’s budget friendly!
